Introduction

I finished my PhD studies at the University of Vienna in June 2023. My dissertation project is the discourse analysis of recent (2000-) mainland Chinese historiography on the major maritime missions led by the Ming dynasty’s imperial admiral Zheng He between 1405 and 1433 CE. The maritime missions included visits to port cities located in Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, and East Africa. In today’s China, the missions are often seen as a symbol of openness and peaceful engagement with the outside world, for which reason they are also often referenced in the context of cultural diplomacy.

My current research interests include international relations, Chinese and global history, discourse analysis, digital humanities.

The present website was originally created for the course Tools and Techniques for Digital Humanities taught by Prof. Maxim Romanov at the University of Vienna in the summer semester of 2019. The earlier posts include the assignments for that course.
